Are Big Puff Vapes Legal in the UK?
It depends on the device. A single-use big puff disposable is banned. A rechargeable big puff kit with replaceable pods is legal. Here is the difference.
It depends on the device. A single-use big puff disposable is banned. A rechargeable big puff kit that uses replaceable or refillable pods is legal. The law does not look at the puff count. It looks at whether the device is reusable and how much liquid each pod holds.
What a big puff vape is
A big puff vape is a high-capacity device that delivers thousands of puffs from one kit. They appeared as the high-puff disposables were being pushed out, and they are now the main way people get a long-lasting vape without a single-use device.
The legal line
The 2025 ban removed single-use vapes from sale. To be legal, a vape has to be rechargeable and refillable, with a pod or coil you can replace. A big puff device that you use once and throw away fails that test and is illegal, whatever its puff count. A big puff kit that recharges and takes replaceable or refillable pods is legal.
So the same words on a box can mean two different things. A sealed throwaway claiming 10,000 puffs is not legal here. A rechargeable kit that reaches a high puff count through swappable pods is legal.
Why the puff count is not the rule
UK law does not cap puffs. It caps capacity. A pod can hold at most 2ml of nicotine e-liquid, a refill bottle at most 10ml, and the nicotine can be no stronger than 20mg/ml. Big puff kits reach their high numbers by holding more than one 2ml pod, or by pairing a pod with a separate refill, while each part stays inside the limit. A device that holds 18ml in one sealed pod breaks the 2ml rule and is not compliant.
The October 2026 duty
The e-liquid inside a big puff kit is vaping liquid, so it is caught by the Vaping Products Duty from 1 October 2026. That is £2.20 per 10ml plus VAT. The device itself is not taxed, only the liquid.
What could change
The Tobacco and Vapes Act gives the government powers to consult on pod types and packaging. A ban on prefilled single-use pods was floated but has not been confirmed. For now, compliant big puff kits remain on sale.
How to spot a legal one
A legal big puff kit recharges, takes replaceable or refillable pods, uses 2ml pods, and carries the required warnings. Buy from a proper retailer. A sealed device you cannot recharge or refill, or one with no warnings, has not come through the legal supply chain.
No pod, no puff count
A melt is not a vape at all, so none of this applies to it. There is no pod and no recharge, because there is no device. NYXE dissolves in the mouth, with the nicotine absorbed there.
FAQ
Are 10,000 puff vapes legal in the UK?
Only as a rechargeable kit with replaceable pods. A single-use device claiming 10,000 puffs is illegal, because it is both single-use and over the 2ml pod limit.
Are big puff vapes banned?
No, not as a category. The single-use ones are banned. The rechargeable kits are legal.
What is the legal pod size?
2ml for a nicotine pod, with refill bottles up to 10ml and nicotine up to 20mg/ml.
Will big puff vapes be taxed?
The e-liquid in them will be, from 1 October 2026. The device itself is not taxed.
